Steep Garden Landscaping in Nailsworth, Cotswolds
Perched above the charming market town of Nailsworth, with panoramic views across the Cotswold Hills, Woodchester Valley, and Minchinhampton, this steep hillside garden presented one of the classic challenges we often see in the Five Valleys — sloping terrain and limited access.
At the Steel House Airbnb in Nailsworth, the owners wanted a garden that would not only complement the striking modern property but also provide practical outdoor spaces for guests to relax and enjoy. Our landscaping team set out to design and build a solution that was both functional and in keeping with the natural Cotswold surroundings.
Careful Preparation & Design
We began by carefully clearing the overgrown vegetation, which was hiding the true potential of the site. This revealed an old, small hardstanding area that gave us a base to work from. From there, we excavated and shaped the ground, preparing a stable sub-base to support the new terraced layout.
Terracing is one of the most effective ways to deal with steep gardens in Nailsworth and the surrounding valleys. By introducing defined levels, we were able to transform an otherwise challenging slope into a series of usable, inviting areas — all connected by steps and pathways.
Creating an Outdoor Entertaining Space
At the heart of the project was the desire for a welcoming outdoor entertaining area. We used Indian Sandstone (Fossil Buff) paving to create a warm and durable patio that perfectly complements the modern steel house. This paved area also includes discreetly installed utilities, allowing space for outdoor cooking and dining — ideal for Airbnb guests looking to enjoy evenings overlooking the valley.
Strength & Structure with Natural Materials
To retain the slope and carve out more usable space, we installed railway sleepers, which provide both strength and a natural aesthetic. Behind the sleepers, we prepared a deep planting bed that will mature beautifully over time, softened further with a built-in irrigation system to keep the planting healthy with minimal maintenance.
Cotswold Stone Steps & Local Character
One of the standout features of the design is the set of Cotswold stone–faced steps. These steps lead visitors up to the top terrace, making the upper levels safe and accessible while tying the garden back to the surrounding Gloucestershire landscape. The combination of local stone and careful craftsmanship ensures the garden feels both authentic and timeless.
A Garden Connected to the Landscape
The finished result is a garden that feels seamlessly connected to its Cotswold setting. Guests can now move easily between levels, relax on a sunlit patio, and enjoy views across Nailsworth and the wider Five Valleys. Practical, low-maintenance, and visually striking, this project is a great example of how thoughtful garden landscaping in Nailsworth can turn even the steepest plots into stunning, usable outdoor spaces.
