Deck Builder Stroud: Your Local Decking Experts

Years, a family in Rodborough called us in a panic. Their old deck had started splintring bad and there kid had got a nasty piece of wood stuck in her foot. We was round there within two hours, and by the end of the week they had a brand new composite deck that'll last them twenty years without a splinter in sight.

Thats the kind of service you get when you work with a proper local deck builder in Stroud. We know the weather round here – how the rain sits on wood through winter, how the frost gets into them cracks, and why your deck needs proper drainage or your looking at rot within five years.

Been building decks across Stroud, Nailsworth, Painswick and the surroundng valleys for nearly ten years now.

Why Decks Fall Apart Round Here

The Cotswold climate aint kind to outdoor wood. We see it every week – decks that looked great when they went in but five years later their sagging, boards are loose, or the whole things gone green with algae. Usually comes down to three things:

Wrong wood for the job. Softwood pine might be cheap but it dont handle our damp winters. We use pressure-treated timber as standard, and for clients who want somthing that'll outlast them, we recommend composite materials that dont rot, warp or need painting.

Poor drainage underneath. Water pools under your deck, you got problems. We always slope the ground away and leave proper gaps between boards so rain drains through instead of sitting there breeding damp.

Skipped the treatment. Even good wood needs protecting. We seal every deck we build and tell people strait up – you need to re-treat it every couple years if you want it lasting.

Deck Design That Actually Works

Here's what most deck builders wont tell you: fancy designs look great in photos but some of them are a nightmare to maintain. We do deck design based on how you'll actually use the space, not just what looks good on instagram.

We measure up your garden, talk about sun direction (matters more than people think), figure out access for furniture, and design something that fits your actual life. Then we draw it up proper so you can see exactly what your getting before we start.

Most deck design projects round Stroud run between £800 and £3,500 depending on size and materials. We dont charge for the initial consultation and design drawings – thats just part of the service.

Wood Deck Construction vs Composite

People always ask whats better – proper wood or composite. Honest answer is it depends what you want.

Wood deck construction gives you that natural look and feel. Real timber warms up in the sun, ages with character, and you can sand it down if it gets scratched up. We mainly use pressure-treated softwood for budget builds or hardwood like Ipe and Cumaru for premium jobs. A well-maintained wood deck round Stroud'll last 15-20 years easy.

Composite costs more upfront – maybe 40% more than treated softwood – but you never paint it, never seal it, and it dont splinter or rot. Good for families with young kids or people who cant be bothered with maintainance. The newer composites look pretty close to real wood now too.

Patio Decks for Small Gardens

Not every garden in Stroud got room for a massive deck. We do loads of patio decks that are maybe 3m x 2m, just enough for a table and chairs or a couple of loungers.

These smaller patio decks are perfect for terraced houses in town or cottage gardens where you want a flat area without the expense of proper paving. We can usually fit them in weekend, and because their raised up they drain better than patios that sit at ground level.

Price-wise your looking at £1,200 to £2,200 for a basic patio deck including installation. Add railings or built-in benches and it goes up from there.

Deck Repair Before You Need Replacing

Most decks dont need fully replacing when they start looking tatty. We do deck repair work that saves people thousands compared to starting from scratch.

Common repairs we handle:

Replacing rotten boards (usually the ones closest to the house where water runs off the roof) Fixing wobbly railings before someone leans on them wrong Reinforcing sagging sections where the joists werent spaced right originally Treating algae and mould without damaging the wood Replacing rusted fixings with stainless steel ones that'll actually last

If your decks less than ten years old and the frame's still solid, repairs usually make more sense than replacement. We'll tell you straight if its too far gone though – no point throwing good money after bad.

Deck Replacement When Its Time

Sometimes a decks just done. The frames rotted through, the woods beyond saving, or its been bodged so many times theres nothing left to work with. Thats when you need deck replacement.

We strip everything back to ground level, check the foundations are still good, and build you a new deck from scratch. Often we'll adjust the size or design based on how you actually used the old one – maybe make it bigger, add stairs somewhere different, or change the board direction.

Full deck replacement in Stroud typically runs £2,500 to £8,000 depending on size and what materials you choose. Takes about the same time as new installation, maybe a day longer to rip the old one out.

Deck Railing Repair and Replacement

Deck railing repair is something we get called out for constantly. Railings take more abuse than the deck itself – people lean on them, kids climb them, and their more exposed to weather.

Wobbly railings are dangerous. We've seen ones come away completely when someone put their weight on them. If yours moves at all, get it sorted before someone gets hurt.

We can match existing railing styles if your just replacing a damaged section, or upgrade the whole lot to something sturdier. Glass panel railings are getting popular round here now – you keep your view of the garden and they need less maintaining than wood balusters.

Deck Cleaning That Dont Damage Wood

Every deck needs deck cleaning once a year minimum. All that algae and dirt dont just look minging – it makes the surface slippy and holds moisture against the wood which speeds up rot.

We use low-pressure washing and proper deck cleaning products that remove the grime without tearing up the wood fibres. High-pressure washers are the worst thing you can use on decking – they look like their doing a good job but they destroy the surface and you end up with splinters everywhere.

After cleaning we let it dry proper then apply new treatment or stain. Whole process takes a day for an average deck and costs around £250-400 depending on size and condition.

Deck Painting and Wood Staining

Deck painting aint something we usually recommend for horizontal surfaces – paint can get slippy when wet and it chips off where people walk. But for railings and vertical bits it works great.

Wood staining is better for the deck boards themselves. Stain soaks into the wood instead of sitting on top, so it lasts longer and dont peel off. You got two types: transparent stain that shows the wood grain through, or solid stain that's more like thin paint.

We use Ronseal and Cuprinol mainly – their products hold up well in our climate and you can get them locally if you need to touch up later.

Colors? Most people round Stroud go for natural browns and greys that blend with the garden. We done a few black stained decks recently that look proper smart in modern gardens.

Porch Construction and Front Deck Areas

A good porch adds value to your house and gives you somewhere to dump muddy boots. We do porch construction from simple covered entries to full wraparound porches with seating.

Front porches need to match your houses style or they look stuck on. For Cotswold stone cottages we usually do simple timber frames with pitched roofs. For newer houses you got more options – flat roofs with lighting, glass panels, contemporary designs.

Planning permission can be an issue with front porches depending on how close you are to the road, so we always check that before starting work.

Pergola Construction for Covered Decks

Want shade on your deck without fully roofing it? Pergola construction gives you that in-between option. The open slats let light through but take the edge off strong sun, and you can grow climbing plants up them for more coverage.

We build pergolas in timber or composite to match your deck. They can be freestanding or attached to the house, and we make them strong enough to hold outdoor lights, heaters, or hanging baskets.

Popular addition round here is retractable canopies between the pergola beams – you get full sun when you want it and waterproof cover when it rains.

Patio Enclosure Construction

Patio enclosure construction is different to regular decking because your creating a three-season room thats protected from weather. We partner with glaziers for the glass work but handle all the timber framing and roofing.

These are bigger projects requiring planning permission usually, and your looking at £8,000+ for a decent sized enclosure. But you end up with useable outdoor space from March through October instead of just the few weeks in summer when British weathers decent.

Fence Building Alongside Decks

We do loads of fence building when were putting decks in because most people want privacy or wind protection. No point having a lovely deck if your neighbors looking right at you or the wind makes it unuseable.

Standard fence panels are cheap but they blow down in the first proper storm. We build custom fences with concrete posts and heavier duty panels, or do proper close-board fencing that'll last twenty years.

For a different look, we also do horizontal slat fencing in the same timber as your deck, or living walls with trellis and planting.

Areas We Cover

We do deck building across Stroud and all the surrounding areas. Regular work in Nailsworth, Painswick, Stonehouse, Chalford, Minchinhampton, Woodchester, Amberley, and everywhere between.

The valleys round here mean lots of sloping gardens, which is where our experience really shows. We've built decks on some properly steep sites using adjustable supports and careful leveling. That hillside garden that seems impossible? We've probably done worse.

What Makes Us Different

Been trading in Stroud since 2018. You'll find our decks all over town – ask around and someone'll know our work.

We show up when we say we will. Sounds basic but you'd be surprised how many tradespeople round here operate on 'maybe Thursday, might be Friday, could be next week' time.

We price jobs properly from the start. No 'oh we found extra work' surprise bills halfway through. You get a written quote that covers everything and thats what you pay.

All our timber comes from proper merchants with guarantees, not the cheap stuff that warps after six months. We use stainless steel fixings on every job because regular screws rust out in our climate.

We actually answer the phone. And if we dont, we call back same day.

Typical Costs

People always want to know numbers, so here's rough guides for Stroud:

Basic 4m x 4m patio deck in treated softwood: £2,200-3,200 Same size in composite material: £3,500-4,800 Large 6m x 4m deck with stairs and railings: £4,500-7,000 Deck repairs and board replacement: £350-1,200 Annual deck cleaning and treatment: £250-400 Custom designs with multiple levels: £8,000+

We do free quotes where we actually come measure up and talk through options. No pressure, no obligation, just honest advice about what'll work for your garden and budget.

Getting Started

Best time to build a deck is spring or autumn when the weathers dry but not baking hot. We book up quick in April and May, so if you want something ready for summer get in touch by February.

That said, we work year-round except when its properly freezing or pouring down. Decking boards need to acclimatize anyway, so winter building aint a problem if the grounds not waterlogged.

Call us for a chat about what your thinking. We'll arrange to come see your garden, measure up, and talk through what's possible. Then we draw up designs and give you a proper written quote.

Once your happy to go ahead, we order materials and book you in. Most decks are done inside a week, then you got years of outdoor space to enjoy.

Your garden deserves better than that old rotten patio or muddy grass. Let's build you a proper deck that'll still be solid when your grandkids are running round on it.
